The Enablis way

#1

Be yourself

We hire our individuals for our team simply because we think you’re great at what you do. Whilst there are common key skills and areas of expertise that you’ll share with others, you also have individual traits and the combination of all this together makes you a unique proposition. Together, our goal is to create an environment which does not curtail or inhibit what makes you great but instead enables you to be the best version of yourself; we want to maximise your superpowers.

#2

Be your own boss

Like any organisation, we have lots of different roles with varying areas of responsibility. It may appear subtle, but even in a situation where one person has authority and others are expected to follow their direction, we do not see it as the former being the boss of the latter. You are your own boss and we empower you to do what you think is right in any situation. However, with that comes an expectation that you recognise the responsibilities of others and act as a team player to assist them in the pursuit of their goals.

#3

Honesty about imperfections

The work we do is hard; tough projects, tight deadlines, legacy systems, managing third parties, people pulling in different directions and more! When we look at projects, we don’t expect everything to be perfect and we don’t judge the success of those involved solely on that basis. We value good judgement; an accurate reflection of issues with clear thinking on how to improve matters more than a green report.

#4

Be the creator of ideals

Consultants are frequently drawn into non-ideal scenarios. It could be a struggling project, a dysfunctional team, poor technology choices or a really challenging requirement. We’ve chosen this vocation because we want to help with difficult problems and to make things better. We don’t expect to walk into projects that already use the best tech, have the best working practices and involve greenfield building with no constraints. Our goal is to help our clients achieve those things and it will take a lot of time and hard work.

#5

You are a leader

Consultants are, by definition, all leaders. The expectation of a consultant at any level is that they will do more than just fulfil the basic task that is asked of them – they must be analytic, evaluate whether best choices are being made, reach out to the wider community to gather advice from others and they must carefully and respectfully influence the client. Some think that only those with formal authoritative roles – tech leads, test leads, project managers etc. – are leaders, but that is not the case. Leadership is stronger when it involves having to influence without the rights to directly command or control things. Consultancy only occasionally involves formalised power while it always involves subtle, influential leadership.

#6

Respect the client

One of the hardest things that any good consultant has to do is to both passionately care whilst also being objectively detached. We want the project to be a success, we want the right tech choices to be made and we want the best delivery processes. It is crucial that we retain that passion. However, we must also respect that we are, ultimately, there to support our clients and if, after our best efforts to convince otherwise, they choose against our recommendations then we must commit to support them on that path.

What do we look for in a new hire

Every role we hire has its own set of particular skills or abilities, but there are a few intangibles that are common to all…

Progressive

We want people who are curious and keen to learn new skills. This sometimes manifests itself in ambition and an appetite to move upwards towards bigger challenges, but that is not always the case. A web developer who has learnt about infrastructure, a data engineer who’s moved into mobile apps or a .Net expert who’s taken the leap to AWS and Serverless are all examples of the type of progressive attitude we love to see.

Versatile

Versatility can develop naturally in the progressive, but having the capability to span different roles or technologies isn’t enough; there must also be a desire to do so. The versatile individual is motivated more by the overall goal and is willing to play whatever role is required to help the team get there. They may be a tech lead but they will be willing to do some business analysis or act as scrum master if required. We always try to play people to their strengths, but the best teams are made from versatile individuals who help each other.

Resilient

In some ways, this may appear as contradictory with a progressive attitude – but it is not. Any significant achievement comes with hard times and resilience is the ability to stay the course through ups and downs to achieve something at the end of the journey. We do difficult projects and so it is important that our people are unflustered when things get hard and they can act as a beacon for others who may struggle. The resilient yet progressive person gives anything that seems worthwhile a damn good shot before moving onto other things.

Contemporary

As experts and thought leaders in the field of technology, it is important that our people are able to demonstrate experience of modern practices. This could be the programming languages they have learnt, the tools they have used, the fact that they have embraced emerging paradigms or the techniques and engineering cultures they have been a part of. Things move quickly in technology and we always have to stay up to date and relevant.

Personable

Last, but not least, it is crucial that our people are easy to get along with. Consultants build a wide variety of relationships with various stakeholders in different roles and often in a variety of organisations and industries. Being a good team player and becoming a trusted advisor starts with being a decent person – polite, patient, well-tempered and a bit of fun.

Together our goal is simple

Empower you to be the best version of yourself
